Benigna Personaje was born in 1641 in Bauan, Batangas, Philippines. She was the daughter of Don Juan Personaje and Doña Valeriana de Guzman. Benigna received her early education from her parents and from private tutors.

In 1657, she enrolled at the Colegio de Santa Rosa in Manila. There, she studied under the tutelage of the Dominican sisters. Benigna excelled in her studies and became known for her intelligence and wit.
